An invitation to all to become connected to the world through service.

A word from your Assistant Governor and fellow Rotarian.

I joined Rotary after Lorraine Tarpey, a Rotarian, invited me.  I had no idea what Rotary was other than 'I knew' it was an old men’s dinner club and was shocked she attended.  WOW, was I wrong!  In fact Cohasset Rotary is 50% women and member range from 30 to 95 years old.  I learned I had no idea what Rotary really was or the international power of it as a service organization!  Did you know Rotary is ‘this close’ to eradicating Polio worldwide?   Rotary is a major player in peacemaking, education, community development and maternal & child health among their six focus areas!  When my fellow Rotarian told me the motto of Rotary was ‘Service Above Self" I replied, “OK I’m in!… BUT, I can only come every other week with work, three kids who need shuttling to sports, homework, dinner, etc".  I joined in 2011.  After a year I was hooked and needed an excuse to come every week.  My husband arranged his work schedule to be home early and I looked for a job within the club.  Rotary has become a family to me.  I have met so many quality people in Rotary who I NEVER would have crossed paths with otherwise.  I am GRATEFUL for Lorraine’s invitation.

Don’t be hesitant to go out and invite your friends to Rotary!  Your friends most likely are similar to you and probably enjoy helping others as well.

An invitation to all to become connected to the world through service. 2019-11-20 05:00:00Z 0

A HUGE thank you goes out to the Cohasset Rotary Club for their support of our new Governor and Assistant Governor!  Eleven members drove all the way to the Cape Codder Resort for Stephen Albright's District Governor Installation and the installation of his Assistant Governors which included Cohasset Rotarian Diane Herth - our club's first District Officer in the history of the 1946 club.  With whoops and hollers (and I believe I saw a 'wave' occurring at the Cohasset table😂), the new slate of District officers were installed.  With Steve at the helm of the District, Diane assisting his leadership in Cohasset, HINGHAM, Nantasket/Hull and SCITUATE, and Trish Morse as our Cohasset Club President, 2019-2020 will be a great year!

Road Race-by-the-Sea March 31st!

The Cohasset Rotary Road Race by the Sea 10K is the best way to start the running season. For 42 years Cohasset Road Race by the Sea has been a spring tradition and training run for the Boston Marathon, and remains one of Cohasset Rotary Club’s most important fundraisers. We have the happiest runners and it shows!  Great views and lots of fun! All runners receive our collected long sleeve tee shirt.  Runners register here www.roadracebythesea.com

Our 175 volunteers (almost half are high school students!) are instrumental in making this a fun and successful day.  We need people at registration passing out bibs and tee shirts, people guarding intersections, in the kitchen cooking hot dogs, cutting bagels and fruit.  All volunteers receive a tee shirt.  If you would like to volunteer register here!

Cohasset Road Race by the Sea run by over 800 in snow & sleet & wind & smiles.

story thumbnail
Nothing keeps our runners (or volunteers) from smiling, not rain, snow, sleet or wind.  The Cohasset Road Race-by-the-Sea Fun 5 mile run is over with over 800 runners who came out to support Cohasset Rotary.  Thank you hardy souls!!!

We could not have the road race without our 200+ volunteer ‘veterans' and ‘newbies', and half of them were our amazing high school students and younger Scouts - our community is SO giving!  We lost count of how many appeared on race day asking "How can I help?".  AMAZING!   We are SO appreciative of each and everyone of you who worked and came with a smile and positive attitude - irregardless of the threatening and too frequent March precipitation (not to mention that fluffy ’S’ word) and the blowing winds.

ASP Appalachia Service Project receives $2000 grant from Cohasset Rotary

story thumbnail
Judy and Gary Ritts have served the Appalachia community with thousands of students over 28 years.  The Appalachia Service Project (ASP) makes homes dryer, safer and warmer for the residents of the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia and Kentucky.  Students (and leaders) donate 10 days from their work schedules to drive two days down and two days pack, sleep on gymnasium floors and shower in cold water to serve the poor communities who desperately need our love and building  skills to improve their living situations.  The families are carefully selected to receive new roofs, decks, wheelchair ramps, stairs, floors, plumbing, electrical... whatever they need to be warmer, safer and dryer.  Judy Ritts has taught sixth grade special education for decades in Cohasset and retired last year.  Rev. Gary Ritts will be preaching his last sermon next week after two decades at the Second Congregational Church of Cohasset.  they look forward to leaving in two weeks for their last trip to Appalachia as the head of the project, but fear not - they will continue in some aspect as volunteers with ASP.

Tomasz Taylor from CERN

Posted on Nov 04, 2014
Speaker:  Tomasz Taylor from CERN
We thank Tomasz Taylor for spending an evening with the Cohasset Rotary club.  For a brilliant man he had a way of making us non-scientists feel 'not too stupid' and was definitely entertaining!

Tom grew up in Poland and is a physicist.  Tom is an 'atom smasher' at CERN.  He currently is also a Physics professor at Northeastern University.  Atoms 101:
  • Atom is one billionth of a meter
    • nucleus with electrons that travel around it.
    • a nucleous of an atom has protons and Neutrons and Quarks
    • July 4, 2012 a new particle within an atoms was discovered.  'Hicks Boson' ('God's particle')
  • Atom smashers make atoms fall apart so that the physicists can see how they work and what they are made of
  • In Geneva Switerland there is a 17 mile circumference tunnel under the city where nuclear studies are done.
  • Nothing can move faster than light
    • atoms are moving at 99.99999% the speed of light
  • Why is this atom knowledge important?  Why do we care?
    • Electricity is due to electrons moving
      • electrons actually move at a snails pace, it is the 'signal to move' that moves quickly and makes a light turn on at the flipp of a switch
  • At CERN there would be 2000-3000 people working on 1 experiment.  In order to communicate, they needed the convenience of internet so Tim Berners at CERN invented the internet decades ago.
  • MRI are using magnets and atoms to view non-invasively what is happening in the human body

SPEAKER - Mary Jo Larsen "Patterns of Conflict, Peacebuilding and Sustainability"
Mary Jo Larsen has been a permanent Cohasset resident for 6 years.  She worked as a Peace Corp volunteer for 2 years in Venezuela, received her Masters in Applied Linguistics, did another 6 years with Peace Corp worldwide and has received her PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution.
Mary Jo has worked for Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and worked in multi-lateral and NGO organizations.  While recently spending time in Kenya and while waiting to go thru Turkey to go to India, she experienced part of Rotary Internationals work as they required her to have a brand new Polio vaccine to make sure they remained Polio free.
Mary Jo has spent most of her adult life working on conflict and peacebuilding. While speaking to the Cohasset Rotary Club she asked it's members what is conflict?  Is conflict a 'problem'?  Conflict is an intentional battle of wills.  Conflict is DANGER and OPPORTUNITY.
